Synopsis (from Goodreads): Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?
Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.
Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?
My Take: In a sense this is a coming of age type of story. Ismae starts off as an outcast. Shunned by first her father, than her husband. Before she knows it she is smuggled to the convent of St. Mortain to start a new life.
And then there is Duval, a handsome duke and a possible target for Ismae. Someone that she hopes is not. She is ordered to stay close to him and to watch not only those around him but Duval as well. An order that turns out to be difficult to follow but for reasons that Ismae did not expect.
I enjoyed reading Ismae’s story and the path she took to grow into her own person. Her story is full of intrigue with each character plotting their own tangled webs of deceptions and alliances.
The first book of the His Fair Assassin series, Grave Mercy, is a historical spy novel, full of assassinations, twists and turns, and a dash of budding romance, making it a fantastic read.
My Rating: 4/5
